World Cup 2110:Lagerback bags Super Eagles job, signs five months contract
Former Swedish coach Lars Lagerback has been appointed the new Manager of the Nigeria Super Eagles after an excruciating screening of some of the best in the World of football Management.
Therefore, Lagerbark will now lead super Eagle this June tothe World Cup in South Africa. The Nigerian Football Federation has handed the 61-year-old with a short-term contract to take charge of the Super Eagles until after the World Cup.
Lagerback was in charge of the Sweden National Team from 1998 until 2009 when he resigned after failing to qualify them for the 2010.
The appointment of the Swede therefore formalises the redeployment of former Manager Amodu Shaibu who has been given the responsibility of taking charge of the home-based Super Eagles.
Part of the condition is the assurance from the Swede that he would take Super Eagles to the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.
Lagerback was one of number of high-profile names linked with the post, and former England coaches Glenn Hoddle and Sven Goran Eriksson were both known to be keen.
Nigeria have been grouped with Argentina, Greece and South Korea at the finals.
The week-long screening had seen the line up of Bruno Metsu who had been previously favoured. Glenn Hoddle took over the interview rostrum on Wednesday, but in the end it was Lagerback, who was interviewed last. He won it.
According to Ademola Olajire, NFF spokesman, “He has now signed a five-month contract to take Nigeria to the World Cup.”
Lagerback succeeds Shaibu Amodu as coach of the Super Eagles, after they finished third at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Angola last month. The Swede will watch their friendly against Congo DR on Wednesday, and will be based in Nigeria from next month until South Africa 2010.
Lagerback has huge experience of international coaching. He was co-coach of Sweden at UEFA EURO 2000 alongside Tommy Soderberg, and led the team outright from the summer of 2004 until 2009, when he resigned following the failure to qualify for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup.
