Dora Akunyili takes a glorious exit from Information Ministry.
Immediate past Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, yesterday said that the dissolution of the federal cabinet by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan was in good faith and in the interest of the nation
Answering questions from journalists after handing over the ministry’s baton to the Permanent Secretary, Prof. Nicholas Damachi, yesterday in Abuja, Akunyili explained that the Acting President, in his wisdom, dissolved the cabinet due to the political situation in the country.
Speaking on her next line of action, Akunyili said: “I will use this opportunity to rest, reflect on the past and weigh options for the future.”
In her handover speech, Akunyili thanked the Acting President, members of the National Assembly and the media for the support given to her throughout her tenure as the Minster of Information and Communications.
Her words: “There is time for everything. As the time comes for departure, I am leaving with an unshaken faith in the destiny of our great country. It is this faith that informed the Re-branding Nigeria Project, and I am glad that we used that initiative to help the ordinary Nigerian begin the journey of re-discovery.
“We have also tried to improve the flow of information between the government and the governed through the publication and distribution of Open government- a free colourful month.”
Akunyili said that the ministry, during her tenure, attracted the interest of the World Bank to Nigerian entertainment industry, (Music and Nollywood) and that the bank provided a grant of N3 billion to support the industry.
She added that the ministry also set up a 20-man committee to review the salaries and wages of staff working in federal-owned media organisations, noting that the review was necessary in view of the nature of their duty. She expressed the hope that her successor would work with the parastatal in implementing the recommendations that would be submitted by the committee.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary commended the out-gone Minister for her tireless and selfless service to the nation.
“It is clear that she had exhaustive list of achievement as an innovator in the ministry even with the re-branding project she initiated. We pray that God will continue to protect and guide you, because we are sure that you will excel wherever you find yourself,” Damachi said
