PDP stamps Jonathan’s candidature in April Presidential election

President Goodluck Jonathan

LONDON: 20/01/2011. Acting Chairman of the ruling PDP commends the Convention Committee that conducted the recent party’s primary election in Abuja describing the election as the best ever in history of the ruling party.

The Peoples Democratic Party acting Chairman, Bello Mohammed has expressed his trust and confidence in the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan as the newly elected candidate for the party’s April Presidential election contest.

Receiving the reports of the January 13 Convention Committee for the choosing of the candidate for April’s presidential election, the acting Chairman congratulated the committee, praising their efforts and achievement: “We are happy and proud of the work you have done. This is the best convention we have had since the creation the party,” he commended

“You have averted a potential trouble for the country because if you had failed to conduct a convention that produced a credible candidate, it would have created trouble for the nation,” he continued.

He however assured that with the success of the primary election, the party has laid down a credible moral and due process precedence that would be followed in the April election, assuring:”The transparency exhibited in the party’s National Convention would be replicated in the April general elections”.

He however debunked claims that the main opponent to the winner of the party’s candidature, Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku has refused to accept the result by refusing to congratulate the president’s victory claiming:” “Both the candidates and aspirants who lost, have accepted the outcome of the convention”.

He called on the party faithful to synergise for the task ahead.

He commended members of the committee for an excellent job, adding that they saved Nigeria some crises by conducting a credible convention.

According to Mohammed, the list of PDP representing candidates at all levels in the next election would be ready for submission to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) soon because the party had finished all  compilation of the members’ list.

President Goodluck Jonathan was elected as the party’s presidential candidate for the April general elections at the Abuja convention.

The Nigerian leader secured his candidacy after defeating former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and veteran female politician Sarah Jibril in an intraparty election in the Eagle Square in the capital city of Abuja.

He got 2,736 votes while Atiku secured 805 votes. Sarah Jibril had only one vote.

The party’s acting Chairman may have indicated that the party would not condone any further action in form of court challenges  or illegal  meeting convergence over the election, which had been  reported across the world as the most transparent.

The election is the best public relation for the ruling party for several months , redeeming the party image disaster following consistent misrule and brazen  arrogance which has characterised its trank and file.

Several acts of gangsterism displayed on the eve and aftermath of the death of former President Umaru Yar’Adua by a cabal in the ruling party early last year was the peak of such unruly display.
