“Shed government’s finance weight and lift up Nigeria”, Committee tells rulers
President Goodluck Jonathan has been urged to overhaul the system of governance in Nigeria to give way to a realisable developmental progress and social emancipation.
A Presidential Advisory Committee Council which was inaugurated on the eve of his ascension to the presidency in the aftermath of the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua submitting its report to the government said there should be a drastic cut in the government spending to release the nation’s citizens from the shackles of poverty and untold suffering.
A BBC report had claimed that nearly 75 percent of the $27 billion budget would be spent on running the government and its agencies just as the President’s budget proposal gets the mercy of the House of parliament.
Theophilus Danjuma, Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council, submitting its findings and suggesting solution to most of the nation’s social maladies said the government should cut or combine some of the nation’s ministries to release money for the nation’s infrastructure and economic forward marching.
He praised the government for the success achieved in the power supply sector, but expressed concern about the delay in passing the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).
Danjuma drew the attention of the president to the size of government at all levels and called on him to take necessary steps to address these and other issues affecting the economy.
He cited among other problems the size of government, corruption, rising recurrent expenditure and declining capital investment as part of the bane militating against the nation’s progress.
Receiving the reports on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, President Jonathan admitted that a robust economy was crucial to the survival, growth and well-being of any nation.
According to him, “issues of the economy are critical, since you can’t provide education, health or security without resources generated from a robust economy.”
President Jonathan noted that his administration was willing to listen to all suggestions and recommendations that would lead to improvement of all sectors of the economy.”
While acknowledging the calibre and pedigree of members of the committee to draw home their authenticity and experience in governance, he thanked them for their dedication to the successful discharge of their responsibility, and promised to continue to work with the committee for the good of the nation
Jonathan’s budget proposal is now before Parliament. Nearly 75 percent of the $27 billion budget would be spent on running the government and its agencies.
The budget proposes $6.5 billion for spending on infrastructure.
Among the current issues puzzling the world is the astronomical salaries paid to all arms of the government in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s presidential system has been rated to be the most expensive in the world while many House of parliament members only serve as bench warmers without physical effect of contribution to the nation’s economic, social and political progress and enhancement.
Such undue gratification, over pampering and corruption of the nation’s polity have created a do or die atmosphere in the contest for political office in Nigeria.
Many put their lives on line to attain political positions because of their benefit while the nation rots in shameless backwardness.
Industrial based economy that surges the economic power of great nations are non existence while lack of power has drawn handy professionals to the abyss of extinction putting their hope on undignified Okada riding and mnay are in desperation to travel abroad.
Many Nigeria young girls are working as prostitutes in other less endowed neighbouring countries while many scanvege in those countries looking for all means of livelihood. Yet Nigeria remains an oil giant, one of the richest in the world.
Many awarded local , state and national budgets are distributed among political party faithfuls as this form the basis for political ambition anyway.
The situations have driven millions to desperation as the coming election in April is being focused on as a major factor determining the future the nation and the system of leadership it is running currently.
Late last year, Governor of Central Bank, Sanusi Lamido decried the economic situation of the country, claiming that over 25% of the nation budget are gulped by the nation’s parliamentarians.
Rated about sixth in the rating of the world’s most oil production countries, Nigeria citizens live in the most appalling conditions, which has drastically lowered the people’s mortality rate among the worse in the entire world.
Jonathan last week won the ruling party’s ticket to run for president and the emergence of Nuhu Ribadu as a presidential contestant under Action Congress has bleeped a signal of hope for the nation as she may henceforth witness a major political turnaround with the two bringing a new dawn to the nation political stage if elected.
Jonathan has consistently promised the nation that he would turn things around for the better, while Ribadu has got the applaud of millions across the world as disciplined and uncompromising as a major fighter against corruption which has been the bane of the nation’s progress.
