Car dealer, 47 excreted 70 wraps of cocaine…to appear in court.
An automobile importer, Ofodili Victor, 47, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged exportation of cocaine weighing 1.300kg.
Ofodili was arrested by NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, after it was discovered that he ingested drugs during the screening of passengers on a British Airways flight to Heathrow, London.
It was gathered that while on observation, he excreted 70 capsules of powdery substances which tested positive for cocaine.
PUNCH METRO learnt that Ofodili, a native of Nnewi in Anambra State, is a frequent traveller to the United Kingdom and United States of America.
NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, accused the suspect of having links to drug cartels in Europe and financing several drug trafficking deals with drug cartels in Europe.
“For this operation alone, he invested N5m into the illicit business with the expectation of getting N25m in return,” Ofoyeju said.
According to NDLEA officials, Ofodili, who lives at Opebi, in the Ikeja area of Lagos, said he was new to the drug business.
“This is my first time. I swallowed 70 wraps of the drug which I bought with the intention of increasing my capital base but I regret everything now,” the officials quoted him to have said.
Ofoyeju told PUNCH METRO that investigation showed that after Ofodili completed his secondary education at Dennis Memorial Grammar School at Onitsha in 1989, he ventured into auto-parts business. In 1995, he left Onitsha for Lagos where he continued with the auto-parts business.
According to Ofodili, he also dabbled into the importation of provisions like baked beans, salad cream and vegetable oil from Europe before he settled for automobile importation in 2004.
Ofoyeju, however, said Ofodili was not a car dealer. “He has no car shop but buys and gives people to sell for him, he has been buying cars from the United States since 2004, and why is it that he cannot find a shop?”
“Though he said he was looking for a shop, the truth we have gathered is that the car business, from all indications, is a cover for his drug business and to justify his frequent travels abroad. His last trip was last month when he visited the United States,” Ofoyeju added.
He said that investigation was ongoing and the suspect would be charged to court soon. He added that NDLEA would collaborate with other foreign anti-drug agencies to identify Ofodili’s accomplices.
