Denied President MKO Abiola

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar who was implicated during  the murder trial against Sanni Abacha’s former aide, Major Hamza Al Mustapha, over denied President Moshood Kasimawo Abiola’s death said he would spill the bean soon, but should be given more time to plan for his response to Mustapha’s claims.

Mustapha was recently charged over the murder of  of political activist, Kudirat Abiola, Moshood Abiola’s wife.

“When a General prepares for a battle, he makes programmes and plans and my plan is still on and it will be unfolded and made known at the right time; please wait for that time.”

Abdulsalam  promised to give full details of activities leading to the death of Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Former dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida’s administration annulled the election, which has created a long rift with Nigeria and entire world describing Abiola’s denial of the presidency and Babangida’s action as a rape on Democracy.

Abdulsalam  spoke to newsmen in Minna, on FridayF.

Abiola died in detention when Gen. Abdulsalami, a former Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, was the head of state following the demise of General Sani Abacha inside the Aso Rock (Presidential Villa).

Reacting to allegations levelled against him by the former Chief Security Officer, CSO, to the late Head of State, Gen. Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, that his administration (Abubakar’s) colluded with the United States government to kill Chief Abiola, after the death of his principal; Abacha, as a way of ‘’balancing the equation,’’ General Abubakar said: “It is not yet time to react. I will not make any comment now; it is political.

‘’When a General prepares for a battle, he makes programmes and plans and my plan is still on and it will be unfolded and made known at the right time; please wait for that time.”

He pleaded for understanding from reporters saying that he would open up on the issue at the appropriate time, even as he politely declined to answer further questions on the issue.

On the myraid of socio-economic and political problems confronting the country, the former Head of State threw his weight behind the agitation for a ‘’national dialogue’’ as a way of resolving such challenges, noting that those calling for such dialogue have their reasons and their agitations may not be out of place as it is for the good of the country.

He said: “Let us sit down and dialogue; I am not against it as long as it will be for the oneness and progress of Nigeria. We should always realize that the good Lord that brought us together knew why He did so, and what He has for us to live together,” borrowing from former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s usual statement.

He said he was optimistic that the country would get over all the problems, especially ‘’when we take the bull by the horns by going for a dialogue instead of embarking on war.’’

Abubakar condemned the incessant bombing in parts of the country pointing out that even if the country is divided into 10,000 places, we cannot run away from one another but continue to interact.

He called on all Nigerians no matter our religion, ethnic differences to embrace peace rather than war in order to move the country forward.
