Sex!, the best lifeline for the aged, says reseachers

The sex lives of pensioners have a significant impact on their happiness, a study has found.

The more often people over the age of 65 engage in sexual activity, the more likely they are to be happy with both their lives and marriages, according to the research.

A survey of 238 Americans aged 65 or older found 60 per cent who engaged in sexual activity more than once a month said they were very happy compared to 40 per cent who had not had sex for a year.

Four fifths of those who had sex more than once a month said they were very happy in their marriage compared to 59 per cent who said they had not had sexual activity in the last 12 months.

Dr Adrienne Jackson, assistant professor at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, who conducted the study, said: ‘Highlighting the relationship between sex and happiness will help us in developing and organising specific sexual health interventions for this growing segment of our population.’

She presented the research in Boston at The Gerontological Society of America’s 64th annual scientific meeting.
