Whitney Houston: Why I dashed out of my Ex-wife’s funeral service by Bobby Brown
Despite huge publicity surrounding Whitney Houston’s ex- husband Bobby brown’s initial refusal to
attend her final funeral rites at the New Hope Baptist Church on Saturday in Newark, New Jersey, the popular artist was granted the right of attendance in a last minute official invitation.
Bobby Brown honoured his ex-wife with a sober appearance in her honour butt the unexpected happened- he only spent few minutes and dashed out in anger almost as he entered.
Bobby had attended the service with an entourage of nine people with him to honor whitney.
So many questions have since been asked as to what led to his early departure and refusal to see the service per see.
A source claimed that Brown brought an entourage of nine people with him to the Newark church and had anticipated to sit with them in the family section where Whitney’s family was sitting to declare his solidarity.
According to Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, a dispute over the seating of several of Bobby Brown’s guests led to his abrupt departure mere minutes into the funeral services.
Brown arrived at the New Hope Baptist Church around noon with nine guests, according to DeMaio, who said the group sat in third row of the church where Brown was supposed to be seated with other members of Houston’s family.
Security approached Brown and told him he could remain where he was, but his guests had to sit in another part of the church, DeMaio said.
Brown apparently refused, and was approached a second time by members of the Newark Police Department’s “executive protection unit,” including DeMaio.
Brown’s guests were again asked to move, prompting the R&B artist to turn to his entourage and say “C’mon, let’s go,” DeMaio said.
Brown apparently felt dwarfed at the ceremony and thought he had to reclaim his honour.
Brown and Houston had a volatile 14-year marriage that ended in acrimony. The couple has a daughter, Bobbi-Kristina.
However, Brown confirmed his anger in a statement at the weekend, blaming security for his early exit from the church.
“I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move,” he said in the statement. “Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene. My children are completely distraught over the events. This was a day to honor Whitney. I doubt Whitney would have wanted this to occur. I will continue to pay my respects to my ex-wife the best way I know how.”
DeMaio said no one tried to prevent Brown from seeing his daughter, adding that city officers tried to resolve the conflict as quietly and tactfully as possible.
“I handled the situation inside,” DeMaio said. “He was informed very clearly that he did not have to leave.”
Brown is scheduled to perform Sunday night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and had been rumoured to charter a private jet to meet his contractual obligation on Saturday night after the service.
The embarrassment left Brown visibly upset as he left the church and got into a black Cadillac SUV.
Religious guru, Al Sharpton was one of those who came out to pacify Bobby as he apparently dashed out in anger.
The Rev. Al Sharpton tweeted that he spoke with the singer outside the funeral service:
